Ugh people who yell at me in front of the entire newsroom, then having realised their mistake apologise to me in the quiet corner of the editing suite.
Colleagues who believe that they are superior to me, yet have affairs with equally unattractive people but can’t effing spell! Finally, people who use the phrase “looks set to” in a news bulletin. Why?
Did I mention that I quit?

    RE: this message:
#7925:People who seem to think ‘whining’ is entertaining. Being that you seem to be too pollyanna to have a clue,it’s a step away from going on a shooting spree from all the stress. So what I consider entertaining is watching people like you go down in those sprees because you chose to mock those people instead of being understanding.

I’m #7925 and I still think all this whining is entertaining BUT NOT PRODUCTIVE. You want me to be “understanding” — aw, poor baby, understand this, self pity will keep you right where you are. get up and get busy! (or else, come back here and whine some more so I can have a laugh now and then)

I’m the only photographer at a small daily paper, and I just recently graduated. That being said I usually love my job, however it feels that no one understands what the hell I do here. I have no one to exchange ideas with. The reporters give me no information when I’m headed out on assignments, and my editor doesn’t get photography. I know everyone has to pay their dues, and I should be thankful for the job I have, but still I just want to flip off everyone some days.

    dear newspapers:

fuck you. and your low-paying jobs. and your constant layoffs. and your inability to innovate. and your inept managers. and your broke business model. and your spirit-breaking, soul-sucking demands.

    i hate you.

I’m angry that neither my managing editor nor publisher give two craps about a competing paper redistributing on their Web site the stories my coworkers and I wrote on any given day, or a Web site owner outright plagiarizing one of my stories – therefore both parties are using our copyrighted material to generate Web hits, which equals ad revenue.

Anyone familiar with copyright law and can tell me if the competing newspaper has any right to do what they’re doing? And is there any way I myself can get said newspaper or the plagiarizing Web site to cease and desist?

So I work for a Sydney inner city weekly newspaper which has a great patch for news and has broken some excellent stories.
We only have two journos but we manage. Despite the shocking pay, incompetent management and dodgy News ltd campaigns we occasionally have to run it’s a really good job.

Until now. Management has just informed me the other journo is going somewhere else and I will now singlehandedly be writing an entire paper. Yep that’s gonna work.

If anyone would please give me tips on how to NOT procrastinate, would you let me know?

I’d like to REST on Sunday, but I really have to produce copy. OK — so I’m lazy right now.

    Thanks

I’m angry because newsrooms are some of the most political places in the world. And you’d think people would just care about reporting the news.

    Not so.

I am angry this website wasn’t around 12 years ago when I got out of the biz. Back then, I still filed from the capitol with a TR(ash)-80 and with bitched at the bar.

while its good to have a place for us to vent our anger, i think people might have exaggerated their claims here because of the no-name policy. they dont have to be responsible for what they say.

every profession have their pros and cons. being a journalist is hardly the worst job in the world (what about sales? street sweeping?) but we have to stop comparing it to doctors/pilots/etc. let’s put it in perspective. whining all day doesnt help the situation. how about striking a balance by setting up a forum for happy journalists and see what they say?

sad to say i don’t expect much from 2009, much will remain the same with my tyrannical boss around. I swear this year I will look into other options to get out of journalism, or to simply have a break (which isn’t easy when I have to support my family and the economy is bad)

I’m angry every time my husband gets another raise. He was laid off from his reporter job three years ago (after 20 years in the business) and he got a job as a damn grocery clerk and he’s already making $2 more per hour than he ever did at a newspaper. I should be grateful, but it pisses me off.

I’m angry that newspapers no (longer?) know what social justice or courage mean.

They’re just doing shit on celebrities on drugs. because it sells. And my editor told me that I have to do that stuff, because it brings readers to our website.

I quit one month ago. Many others are thrown out. It doesn’t take that many people to copy-paste Paris Hiltons adventures from the web. That too makes me angry.

I should’ve gone to med school.

I’m angry that I traded a lot for a career in journalism and now, after five years, I’m getting out.

I still love journalism, but I hate the industry. So I’m going to bail and enter something completely different.

I’m also angry, because somebody ate my M&Ms.
