9892 – You do not need a college degree to write well. At one time reporters learned their trade on the job, and got paid for it. I wonder if there is any connection between the rise of Journalism degrees and the decline of newspapers.

So I visited my Career Center at my old university, because I am desperate to get out of journalism. She is helping me with my resume. She asked me to describe my experiences with and problems in journalism. The more I talked, the bigger her eyes got…….when I was done, she looked at me incredulously and said the following: “You really need to seek out counseling as soon as possible, because that is just too much for one person to go through.”

While U.S. newspapers are losing subscribers at a staggering rate, a few dailies stand out because their circulation is rising. But they aren’t necessarily selling more copies.

Here’s why: Since April 1, new auditing rules have made it easier for newspapers to count a reader as a paying customer.

9860 – and I’m sure all your incompetent workmates view you as a egotistical dipshit.
    Which you appear to be!

I would have a guilty conscience if I hired people with college degrees (and student loans) to work for me for almost 60-80 hours a week and only paid them $25,000 a year (or less). I would spend a lot of my time trying to find ways to pay them better as a way to keep morale up in the office.

It’s too bad I’m not a newspaper publisher!!

I’m angry because the sandwich I fished out of the bin beside the courthouse was white bread. Haven’t you guys heard of wholemeal?

Why is it necessary to hump Black Friday all week long and waste the time of at least five reporters, several photographers, and a couple of editors?

I am angry that I now have to compete with retired public school teachers and attorneys for writing jobs as I try to get out of newspapers. Everyone thinks they can be a writer. If you went to school to be a teacher, go teach. If you studied law, go try some cases. I studied writing and have spent 20 years working for paupers’ wages in newspapers. I am a professional writer. You are not. Get out of my profession.

Thanks journalism, for proving to me that hard and sacrifice get me NOWHERE!

Trying to live off a reporter’s salary is like giving three hours worth of oxygen to someone who needs eight hours worth and telling that person to make do.

It finally happened — someone told me this morning that I need to take some anger management classes.

Before I became a reporter, NO ONE would ever say that about me. My parents didn’t raise me to act like this. I guess all these years in this profession have finally taken their toll. I was never angry about anything before I became a reporter. If I was angry, I either managed it well or channeled my anger in constructive ways.

I can think of no greater sign than this that it’s time to leave journalism once for all. Now I just need to find a way to do it.

The Prime Minister of India is yet to condemn the brazen attack at the office of a news channel by a right wing political party. Though the subject was brought to his notice in a meeting. Disgraceful.

I am angry that I was asked to “fill in” on the Saturday day shift for a while last year. Editor said, “It will just be temporary, until the end of football season.”

That was last football season. I’ve worked every Saturday for the past 15 months.

    Re #9858:

For anyone who titles his/her post “A open letter to all fellow journalists,” please be so kind as to turn in that press credential on your way out the door … but thanks for the laugh, because I really needed it after slotting 40 files tonight, many with the same kind of grade-school grammar gaffes as this.

Gee, 9876, don’t you wonder WHY?

I’m angry that I was laid off and now a consultant was hired even though I offered to work as a consultant (income but no benefits). OK, I’m not a journalist but my fellow journalists went to bat for me and signed petitions for me to stay.

I’m also angry that the manager who laid me off and then was laid off himself now has a TOP position at a large newspaper. It must be great to have such high family connections.

This is such a shit show. My editor only worked a day and a half this week while I get stuck doing everything. And when my editor is actually here she is either paying bills online, attending prayer meetings, shopping for avon or preaching to me about closing portals for demons to come into our world.
One week I took a few days off to visit my family on the other side of the country, I worked a total of two days that week, I still had more articles published that week than she did.
I took the long way to get here, undergrad in an unrelated field and then j-school. She has no post secondary and gets away with fucking off to a concert for two days.

I am angry at PR people in general, especially ones who are rude. It’s one thing to not be good at your job, but don’t be snooty. However, there are some who are great and I love them to pieces.
